Favourite Makeup of 2016

Lots of fab new products were launched this year, some of them made the grade, others were sadly lacking. So this is my review of some of my favourite things.

I’m not mad about primers, I still use the Smashbox Primer Water pretty much every day, and to honest I didn’t find anything else to replace it. The Marc Jacobs Coconut Primer is lovely, but I tend to only use it if I’m wearing the Remarcable Foundation.

I’ve used the Yellow shade of Urban Decays Colour Corrector everyday since buying it. If your looking for a cheap alternative go for the NYX HD version. I use it under my eyes and I think it makes a difference. I have tried various green colour correctors, but I think it’s an unnecessary product for me as I don’t particularly suffer with redness. If you fancy a colour correcting kit, the Sleek one is a good option, its a good consistency and the pigmentation of the different shades is decent. It also has a blue shade for covering freckles and sun damage pigmentation on the skin.

There’s been lots of activity on the foundation front this year, Rimmel’s Fresher Skin, Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless, Urban Decay One & Done, Allnighter, the Cushion foundations…to name but a few! For me, the clear winner has been Urban Decays Allnighter. I’ve almost finished my first bottle, it’s perfect for those of us with an oily/combination skin, it’s Matte, stays put through anything, and unlike many matte foundations, it doesn’t look cakey.

The high-end winner, is Marc Jacobs ReMarcable Foundation, this is a beautiful foundation, a little really does go a long way, and again, it stays put and gives an absolutely flawless finish. Theres a good range of shades too, and now it’s available in John Lewis is so much more accessible.

My favourite drugstore foundation, is Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless. It applies evenly, has good coverage and really does stay Matte.

I was super excited when Too Faced Born This Way Concealer arrived in the U.K., but I have to confess, I still prefer the Urban Decay Naked one. For me, even the lightest shade in the TF one was still a touch too dark, and I think the UD concealer has better coverage. I can’t wait to try Tarte Shape Tape though, I think this may be a serious contender.

If you want a good Powder to bake with, I absolutely recommend the RCMA No Colour Powder, it’s perfect for under eyes, it’s fairly inexpensive and most importantly, doesn’t give flash back!

On the pressed Powder front, Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Powder, is a very luxurious option. It’s the most finely milled powder in the whole industry, and so it never looks cakey.

Contouring has again been huge in  2016. Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay. Personally, I love a contour, and I ALWAYS contour!!

I still love the Anastasia Powder Contour Kit, although I tend to reach for MAC Shadester as my daily contour shade. A new addition has been the Kat Von D Shade + Light Palette. This has become one of my firm favourites. The contour shades are perfect, not orange or muddy, and they are evenly pigmented, so no patchiness.

I’m not a massive blush fan, so I tend to stick to the same one which is usually The Balms Hot Mama. This year I have been trying out a few different ones.

Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic blusher in shade Ecstasy I have really grown to love. They have a unique ‘swirl and pop’ application which works really well. It’s very pigmented, so I recommend a light touch when applying.

Sleek Rose Gold Blusher, is a great shade, and it’s fairly inexpensive. I really like Sleek makeup in general, I think it’s good quality.

Ah, so many products!! Highlighters are my favourite makeup items! Glowing, gleaming, strobing, illuminating, whatever you want to call it, we love to do it. It’s hard to choose any particular one, but I was obsessed with Laura Gellers Ballerina, I used to wear it every day. I’ve also been obsessed with Champagne Pop, MAC Soft and Gentle, MUA Highlighters and Jouer Citrine. I really love MAC Soft Frost too, although all four of the new ones they launched are stunning.

NYX Micro Brow Pencil is my holy grail product, I do love the Anastasia Brow Definer, but I can just walk into Boots and buy the NYX one (and it’s half the price!)

I have been using the Benefit Clear Gel, to set my brows. I really rate this product, but I would never have tried it, had Benefit not given trial sizes away with magazines earlier in the year. I think this was an excellent marketing exercise, particularly as they were launching a new range of brow products.

So much palette porn, the Mario Master Palette, Sweet Peach, UD Naked Ultimate Basics, ABH Modern Renaissance, UD Gwen, KVD Matte Metals, that’s just the ones I’ve bought!! Let alone all the Palettes I didn’t purchase!

My favourite/most used palette, of 2016, is without doubt the Anastasia Modern Renaissance Palette. It’s just all my ride or die shades together, plums, reds, orange and gold-what’s not to love? You can create soft daytime looks, and smokey sultry impactful looks. It’s so versatile and it’s completely fabulous!

I’m also very fond of the Kylie Jenner Bronze Palette, if you just want a good warm toned palette, this is perfect. I think they blend beautifully and are consistently well pigmented.

Urban Decay Ultimate Basics is another good everyday palette, But only worth investing in if you don’t already have the Naked Palettes.

Hand down, the best liquid eyeliner I have come across is the Soap and Glory Supercat, works a treat, easy to control, glides on, and is a good price! What’s not to love!!

Sorry mascara Manufacturers, Too Faced Better Than Sex is still the only one for me.

Where to begin, Lip Lingerie, LipKits, metallic lips, glitter lips? I was obsessed with NYX Lip Lingerie (I think I have 8 shades in total), my favourites were Corset and Bedtime Flirt, I have Embellishment but it didn’t look as nice on me as I’ve seen it on others. Then I got DolceK Lipkit, followed by the metallic birthday and holiday editions, I still love these! But I really love the Kylie Lip Liners, they’re so soft! I often wear them alone, so it just looks like a matte lip. They are the best liners I have come across!!

Another firm favourite is the Kat Von D Lolita Studded Lipstick, perfect for autumn, I have Lolita II but I think the first one suits me better.

One last Liquid Lipstick worth a mention is Anastasia Beverly Hills in shade Alison, again it’s really pretty for this time of year. I think the pigmentation of the formula is really good, it’s very even, which is sometimes an issue with Liquid Lipstick.

Thanks for reading! Looking forward to 2017 and all the makeup it will bring!!!xx
